Exploiting surface textures dynamics for dry friction control

Abstract We study the dynamic behavior of a lattice bristle-like elastic elements disposed at interface between rigid still substrate and sliding slab, in steady conditions. Due to normal frictional interactions with moving complex bristles dynamics occur, which may eventually alter overall response structured interface. Indeed, up three main mechanisms friction control can be identified, depending on specific dynamics: relative velocity-dependent modulation local force; misalignment velocity slab velocity, due emergence transverse vibration; coefficient variation load acting bristle. Results show that, properties (i.e., stiffness, load, etc.), significant reduction force opposing motion achieved, also involving self-excited bristle vibration. Since present formulation is scale independent, this result suggest possible different practical application fields, ranging from bio-inspired micro-structured interfaces macro-scale features, such as brush seals electric motors.
